Sen. Allen: You Have an Opportunity
As of this writing, the majority in the Senate hangs on the outcome of the Virginia race, one marrred by a horrible, nasty campaign by both sides. Neither side can hold its head high on this one.
The vote tallies are:
- Webb (D), with 1,172,801
- Allen (R), with 1,165,448
That’s a fraction of a precentage point between them, and the loser, Allen, can call for a recount. He almost surely will. But at the risk of once again flooding my mailbox with missives crying “traitor” (well, usually I get “heretic”, but you get my drift) … I’ll make a recommendation.
Sen. Allen, concede. Take the high ground now, and no one will remember the sleeze during the campaign, and perhaps it will help heal the country just a bit. The spectacle of seeing a recount, which statistically won’t change the outcome (none of them have), for a one-seat majority (which is not a governing majority) is simply not worth it.
The country’s citizens have spoken, and I disagree with most of what they said. But unlike liberals who decry the electorate’s “lack of intelligence”, I hold that the American people corporately are smarter than any of the individuals, including me. So while I still don’t understand the vote, I accept it as the wisdom of the people.
None of the recounts in the years since 2000 have overturned an election. For all our sniping, the electoral process in this country works pretty well. We don’t have massive fraud, but we do have attempts at fraud when the lawyers get involved.
So Sen. Allen, send them home. Concede graciously, and help us rebuild the Republican Party. I suspect people will tire of the liberals who will be running the congress for the next two years, and given good candidates, we may be able to re-take the Senate.
