Advice from other builders has been to utilize half lap joints rather than mitered or butt joints.  The half lap joint is very strong, with more surfaces to glue, and best able to withstand the vibration and movement a boat makes.  To cover the sides of the plywood, I also incorporated a rabbett in the bottom.
The finished hatch coaming, before filling with waterproof putty and rounding the corners off so the hatch will close over it easily.  This simple addition really helps finish off the holes in the deck!
Well, the dog is ready to sail.  Looks like it will be a while for the boat, though.  Actually, I think Abby retreats to the forepeak area to pop up and beg to be released when Kris puts her in the boat.  People have warned me about taking dogs on small boats, although they won't give details!
